3.11.1 People Safety

  • Vamos a lugares oscuros o solitarios

3.11.1.1 Minors

Mothers and fathers are responsible of their daughters and sons’ safety.
The risks they must deal with are different depending on their age group:

  • For any age, but especially for children older than 7 or 8 years old, there is the problem of bullying in schools by peers. We must be aware, talk to the minors, ask them for the relationship they have with others and observe their attitude at school. We must keep in mind this is a key time in the development of their personality.
  • Minors of short age, although also those older than 14, can be victims of sexual abuse carried out by people they trust in their environment. We must be aware of their reactions, comments, acts…
  • Those older than 11 or 12 years old, start to be exposed to adult dangers: alcohol, drugs, harassments, aggressions, small crimes…

There are a number of basic recommendations:

  • They must not get into a car with strangers.
  • They must not eat or drink anything a stranger offers them.
  • They must know their full name, address and phone number.
  • They must know how to act when anyone knocks on the door or phones them.
  • To stimulate sports, other social and culture activities such as music, dancing, theater…
  • To know their Friends.
  • Look at their attitude at school and their studies.
  • Do not prohibit, persuade them and make them understand.

3.11.1.2 Minors and Internet

We have always found more dangers for minors in the outside, now we know there are important risks when seating in front of the computer or other communication devices of technological characteristics:

  • They can access websites of sexual, racist or violent content.
  • They can facilitate data or files suitable of being used maliciously by other people.
  • They can date with people who conceal their true identity behind the anonymity chat programs provide them.
  • They can be harassed, threatened or cheated.

That is why mothers and fathers should follow the following tips:

  • Accompany their daughters and sons to enjoy the possibilities Internet provides them, with the idea that the more they know about these technologies, the better they will handle with them.
  • Explain to them that in chats there are probably malicious people behind a fake identity.
  • Help them understand they have to tell their parents about any sexual proposition, threat, attempted extortion or coercion.
  • Tell them they need their parent’s approval for any purchase or sale in Internet.
  • Make them aware they should not provide information to anyone related to phone numbers, addresses, names or surnames, personal or familiar data, neither trough Internet or by phone.

3.11.1.3 Women

As a rule, women present less physical opposition to the robber. That is why criminals may choose them as victims. Besides, they are the ones suffering almost all sexual attacks made against adults. Therefore, they must be aware of the vulnerability present in the following situations:

  • When entering or leaving doorways.
  • When entering elevators.
  • In basements and garages.
  • In solitary and isolated areas, in vacant lots.
  • In badly lit areas at night.
  • When walking alone in roads; an advice is walking facing traffic.

3.11.1.4 Elderly

Criminals used to consider them suitable victims to obtain their goals, through aggressions as well as through cheating. We list some of the tricks they use:

  • At home pretending to be staff of a supply service (water, electricity, gas…)
  • In the street at the time of withdrawing cash from a bank office, especially in those days near the retirement pension deposit.
  • Also in the Street, tricking them into making fast money. That is the case when:
  • Carrying out transactions at the ATM’s.
  • By phone, asking them for money to give them an alleged prize.
  • A minor or disabled who is throwing money because they do not know that is money.
  • The person who has a winner ticket but urgently needs money and cannot wait to charge it.
  • The person who comes to clean the house.
  • The sale of alleged valuable items which are fake and non-existent.

Besides, do not permit malpractices when they require special care by third parties or harassments in situations of dependence. It would be necessary to inform of these actions at police stations, courts or social services. For these situations, the emergency lines 091 and 112 can be used through the video-interpretation service Svisual.
